First, as medical practitioners using our skill and knowledge to help people with this problem, we have to get to the bottom of why
any particular individual has too much of the wrong kinds of germs growing in their mouths. It may take two days to get to root of
the problem.
The methods and products we use have been tested by us to make sure that they actually work well. We are constantly trying new ways
and products to see what works well. Then we choose from our proven methods and products some which are suited to the individual patient
depending on the cause of the excessive bacteria.
The Dry Mouth cause is the main cause and is also the cause which has been hardest for us to help. Dry Mouth seems to be a growing problem
with the public. It effects all ages but is seen most with older folks. It affects older people the most because older people are
the ones which usually take so much medication. Medications often cause Dry Mouth.
There are many ways to deal with Dry Mouth and one of the simplest is to just drink more water. But this does not always help.
Two very popular and effective products we use are Dentiva and Salese. Our experience is that with most products which you can get
in the drug store, they either don't last very long, or they are not very effective. Dentiva and Salese are long lasting lozenges
which can last up to 2 to 4 hours in the mouth. If you sleep with it in your mouth, it might even last all night. These two products
stimulate saliva flow. They also have zinc, which is a substance which goes out and grabs the sulfur compounds, those nasty chemicals
which are the odor you smell in bad breath. There is also stuff in Dentiva and in Salese which goes out and clobbers the germs which
make the sulfur compounds in the first place.
If your mouth is very dry, then Salese is recommended. If your mouth is not very dry, then Dentiva is recommended. Dentiva has some
saliva stimulating abilities while Salese has an even better ability to stimulate saliva flow in your mouth. Both products have
anti-bacterial
qualities as well as abilities to absorb the Volatile Sulfur Compounds or VSCs. But the most unique thing is how long they both last.
We have found that just about everything else doesn't last very long, and this is a problem with our patients. It's not great to constantly
have to pop something into your mouth.
Patients do keep coming back to these two products again and again. Not only have we come to the conclusion that these two products
are great for their purpose, other doctors who treat Xerostomia or Dry Mouth Syndrome have found this out as well.
As a hint, here is a little more about how Dentiva and Salese work. Xylitol is an ingredient. This is a type of sugar, and a natural
ingredient. So, the bacterial go out and eat it. But it is not really a food for them so they cannot grow with it. It gets in the
way of their metabolism. The other thing is a high concentration of peppermint oil, which actually just kills the germs.
