Dr. Anthony Dailley has been practicing General Dentist for 34 years. He has been treating patients with chronic halitosis during much
of that time. His patients come from all over the world.
The problem of halitosis effects statistically anywhere from 10 million to 70 million, as reports vary. The people with this problem
are of all ages and all races, both rich and poor. Halitosis has no preferences. It is a big problem and it does affect people severely.
Dr Dailley started treating this problem about 15 years ago because he came across some research on the condition which got his interest.
Before this, attempts to treat patients were unsuccessful. He would do as many other dentists do which was to run some tests and then
to send them off to stomach doctors, which was not effective. After studying the research, Dr. Dailley felt that he understood the
problem well enough to be able to help people with it.
There are a lot of misconceptions we see about this problem. Patients come with these misconceptions, learned from various sources.
There is some information available which is not always completely correct.
Probably the most misconceived idea about what causes chronic bad breath or halitosis is that it is because of gastrointestinal issues
such as gastric reflux. Our experience is that G.I. problems do not cause this. During 15 years of efforts and after treating over
15,000 people it has been determined that gastro-intestinal issues are not a cause.
People also assume that certain foods such as onions and garlic or others will cause this problem as well. Food can produce food odors
but this is only on a temporary basis, for a few hours perhaps. If you don't like the odors of these foods you can avoid eating them
or cleanse the mouth thoroughly after consuming. After awhile the food odor goes away. The word Chronic means that it does not go away.
Yet another common misconception is that this problem comes from the tonsils. There are something called tonsil stones and there is
a lot of literature out on the internet which blames these. In all of the years of dealing with this issue, we have not seen a single
case caused by tonsil stones.
Another misconception is that halitosis is a contagious disease. It is not. You don't have to be afraid of passing it on to others.
Once you realize that many people are confused about what causes halitosis then you can learn about what really causes it.
